The websites listed above are a great place to start when it comes to Kentucky Derby betting sites. All have been held to our standards and either meet or surpass those standards in all cases. Each site might have specific strengths and weaknesses, but they all can be considered reliable and trustworthy.
You might wonder what it is about certain Kentucky Derby betting sites that separates them from others. Here are some of the qualities that we seek out.
Dependability
It’s crucial when you go onto a Kentucky Derby betting site that you can trust your money with them. This seems like a basic principle, but you’d be surprised how many people, in a rush to make their bets, will skip even this most basic of standards. They often regret it after the fact.
You can find many sites that will take your money, no questions asked. But will they return it to you with all the winnings you might have amassed? There a lot of unscrupulous characters out there trying to bilk people out of their money, especially in the online gambling world where much of it is unregulated.
In fact, events like the Kentucky Derby will draw in a lot of these nefarious, money-stealing types because of how popular they are. That means you have to be extra careful when choosing your Kentucky Derby betting sites. Beware of lofty promises. Our selected sites are all extremely dependable, and that’s far more important.
Establishment
By establishment, we mean that these Kentucky Derby betting sites have been up and running for quite some time. Many entrepreneurial types see an online gambling site as a way to build a business. They might even have the best of intentions in terms of how they plan to deal with their customers.
The problem is that sites need to have the proper amount of capital behind them to guarantee that you’ll get paid when you win. And for many newer sites, that just isn’t the case. As a result, you could find yourself coming up empty when you win if you frequent such a site.
You’re better off with sites that have a long, solid track record behind them. These sites can deliver when you win. They also have encountered every kind of situation before, so they are well-equipped to solve your problems.
It’s easy to get caught up in something new and flashy. But established Kentucky Derby betting sites are the way to go to take surprises out of the equation because when you’re expecting money to be coming your way, surprises are never a good thing.
Competitive
The online gambling space is filled with sites trying to give you the best that they have to offer to secure your business. As we mentioned above, not all of them can deliver on those promises. But the Kentucky Derby betting sites we have listed can offer promotions that are worthwhile and deliverable.
If you’re a newcomer to the site, you can usually expect to see some kind of deposit bonus that will add heft to the money that you put into your original account. Some sites might even offer free wagers, although you generally also have to wager some of your own money before you can collect winnings from the free bets.
Many of the Kentucky Derby betting sites listed here aggressively try to hold on to the customers that they already have. That means that they will give bonuses for so-called “reloads” to your account. A reload occurs when you deposit more money into an account that might have been stagnant for a while.
You also might see these sites give you rewards if you are an extremely active bettor. They might offer VIP perks that make gambling heavily at the site more valuable to you. In this way, they act the same as a brick-and-mortar establishment in trying to secure your business.
The bottom line is that you should be in good hands with these Kentucky Derby betting sites in terms of getting the most impact out of your gambling investment. And these sites will usually do whatever they can to tie your wager into the Kentucky Derby, since it is such a well-bet event. In that way, your wager has an even better chance of bringing you rewards if you can pick a winner.
Variety
This might not be absolutely necessary to you. If you just want to focus on the Kentucky Derby, or even just horse racing, there might be sport-specific sites which can do the job for you. These sites probably can’t be as aggressive about any rewards they offer you, however, as sites that offer more of a full gambling menu.
Most horse racing fans looking for Kentucky Derby betting sites are probably on the hunt for a little variety. This might come in the form of gambling on other sports, such as football, basketball, boxing, or whatever your favorite might be. Or the site could also offer casino-style gambling, since many games that you find in the casino can easily be translated to the online world.
If, on the other hand, you are a casual fan that is only interested in the Derby, you still might have a strong interest in other types of gambling. That’s why it might be a good idea for you to look for a site, like the ones above, that can be a one-stop shop for any online gambling needs you might have. The sites we have listed are Kentucky Derby betting sites, but they are so much more than that.
One other way that these horse racing betting sites provide variety is by allowing you the opportunity to bet using multiple devices. The best sites will allow you to use a smartphone, tablet, or any other internet-connected device for your betting on the Kentucky Derby. In a world where people are increasingly on the go, this is a great convenience.
After all, you can’t always be tethered to your computer in your daily life. Any reputable Kentucky Derby betting site will give you the option of sports betting, casino betting, and horse racing betting. And it will allow you to do all that no matter where you happen to be at the time.
Questions You Need to Ask of Your Kentucky Derby Betting Site
When and How Do I Deposit and Withdraw My Money?
Deposits and withdrawals are crucial elements of the online gambling world. Kentucky Derby betting sites that have clearly detailed policies for putting in money and getting it out are the ones you should be seeking. If the site in question is a little foggy about the whole situation, you could be in for some disappointment.
In terms of deposits, you need to find out what the site accepts. Most Kentucky Derby betting sites will allow you to fund your account with credit card payments. But you can also find some that allow you to fund your account with cryptocurrency, which makes for quicker, more secure payments into your account (as well as faster withdrawals).
Knowing the guidelines for withdrawals is even more important. After all, any winnings you amass at Kentucky Derby betting sites won’t mean anything if you can’t eventually collect them. That’s why you should demand that the site lets you know exactly when and how you will receive your money.
It’s not uncommon for a site to require you to deposit a minimum amount. Nor is it all that unusual for them to require you to bet a certain amount before you can expect to collect winnings. These are pretty much standard procedures for these sites, as they need to be in place for them to sustain their bottom line.
But what shouldn’t be involved are seemingly unreasonable requirements for withdrawals and deposits. You also shouldn’t go into the process without knowing exactly what to expect in these departments. Do your research to make sure you can create an account on a Kentucky Derby betting site with confidence.
How Do I Get in Touch with the Site If There Is a Problem, and When Will They Respond?
Basically, this two-part question comes down to the level of customer service that Kentucky Derby betting sites display. Again, the sites that we’ve listed have pretty impeccable reputations in this department. You need to make sure that any site you sign on with has this reputation as well in case you choose to go out on your own and find a different site.
The first thing you should be looking for is contact information. Can you call the site at any time and get a response? Are there multiple ways to get in touch with them, including live chat and emails?
Once you do get in touch with them, what is their response time? When they do respond, do they immediately take steps to help you, or do they put you on the back burner? And are they courteous?
Also, consider the way the representatives of Kentucky Derby betting sites deal with you when they are trying to pitch you on something. Salesmanship is par for the course from a gambling website, as it is in their best interests to have you betting as much as possible with them. But if that salesmanship deteriorates into a hard sell that leaves you feeling intimidated, it can sour your entire experience.
The best way to find out these things is to check out gambling forums, social media, and the word of mouth of other bettors. Again, the sites we have chosen here have already demonstrated their ability in this area. Any sites you try out on your own should be fully vetted for their customer service before you proceed.
Can I Easily Use the Kentucky Derby Betting Site?
Maybe you intuitively know how to navigate online no matter the scenario. But if you’re the type who might not be so technologically savvy, it’s important that your Kentucky Derby betting sites can be easily handled. Otherwise, you could find yourself frustrated or even missing out on bets you want to make.
In terms of the site design, you should be able to easily tell where, for example, the horse racing section is and how to get to the Kentucky Derby page specifically. You should make sure you’re comfortable with the process of taking some of the money from your account and designating it for a specific bet. And in case you don’t get to watch the action, you should be able to tell from the site if and when you’ve won the bet.
Another important factor to consider regarding the operation of the website itself is whether it makes for a smooth experience. Poorly-designed websites can sometimes have pages that take a long time to load. When you are trying to get to a specific page to make a bet, especially on a Kentucky Derby betting site when the timing is crucial, you need to know that you can get there on time.
It’s important to find out as much information about this side of the site as possible through the methods we listed above. One other way you can find out is to ask the site if you can play some sample bets with no money at stake. That will allow you the opportunity to make your way around the Kentucky Derby betting site to see if it’s a smooth fit.
Betting on Kentucky Derby Betting Sites
We’ve talked about what these betting sites should be like in terms of how they operate and how they deal with you. Let’s focus now on the betting strategy of placing Kentucky Derby bets. It’s a race that presents excellent betting opportunities for you — perhaps more than your average horse race.
Why is the Kentucky Derby a great chance for you to make money with your wagers? Here are just a few of the reasons:
- Size of Field: Most Thoroughbred horse races contain somewhere between six and fourteen horses. The Kentucky Derby allows 20 horses in the field. What that means is that you can get much better odds on your pick, even the favorites, and the denseness of the field often leads to unexpected results, which tend to pay a lot more.
- Unpredictability of Young Horses: Although it’s arguably the most famous horse race in the entire world, the Kentucky Derby is generally contested by inexperienced horses. They are only three-year-olds, and it’s early in the season, meaning many have only raced a few times in their careers. That means it’s hard to gauge the competitors, opening up excellent value opportunities at Kentucky Derby betting websites.
- Distance of the Race: Again, at this stage in their career, most of the horses that compete in the Kentucky Derby have likely never been in a race as long as the Kentucky Derby (1¼ miles). The bettor has to anticipate if a horse will be suited to that distance. It’s a guessing game, and it’s another reason that bettors love the challenge of Kentucky Derby wagering.
Types of Bets You Can Make at Kentucky Derby Betting Sites
For those who might be somewhat new to betting on horse racing, here are some of the basic bets that you can make on the Kentucky Derby or any other race you might encounter at the horse racing site of your choice:
- Win: Your horse must win the race to win the bet
- Place: Your horse must come in first or second
- Show: Your horse must come in first, second, or third
- Exacta: You must pick the first two horses in the order of finish
- Trifecta: You must pick the first three horses in the order of finish
- Superfecta: You must pick the first four horses in the order of finish
- Daily Double: You must pick the winner of two races in a row
In general, the win, place, and show bets at Kentucky Derby betting sites are relatively easy to win compared to the others. The so-called “exotic bets,” which require you to pick multiple horses, are difficult to win. But if you do, you can expect to win a lot of money for a relatively small wager.
How to Choose Which Horses to Bet in the Kentucky Derby
You might think that winning a bet on the Derby is as easy as choosing among the finest Kentucky Derby betting sites and then picking a winner. Yet hardened horse players have struggled to make the right bet on the Derby. Although it’s a great race for value, it’s a difficult race to handicap, which, for the uninitiated in horse racing betting, refers to the process of deciding which horses will do well in the race.
But you don’t have to be completely in the dark. Here are some tips on how to bet the Kentucky Derby:
- Find a Program: The old adage in baseball about being unable to tell the players without a program holds true for the Kentucky Derby as well. You can find them easily online for free for the Kentucky Derby, as opposed to other normal races where it might cost you money. Once you have a program or racing form as they are sometimes called, you can start to look at the horses’ statistics and past performances.
- Watch Some Races: Statistics are great, but don’t discount the “eye test” when you are sizing up the field. Watching past races will let you know which horses looked to be going easily and without effort and which seemed to be laboring. It will also show which horses benefitted from a good trip in past races and which had bad racing luck that could be due to turn in their favor.
- Play the Odds: Decide early on what you’re looking for in your Kentucky Derby bet. If you just want to make a profit, the best way to do so might be to make a simple wager on the favorite to show. But those who want to be adventurous should look at the odds, which can be found on all reputable Kentucky Derby betting sites, and find horses with mid-priced or long odds that can conceivably pull off an upset.
- Don’t Forget the Human Element: Great horses usually have great trainers and great jockeys guiding them. And many of these jockeys and trainers have excellent track records in big races like the Kentucky Derby. Make sure to keep these folks in mind when you’re placing Kentucky Derby bets.

The Kentucky Derby is not just the longest-running annual sporting event in America, nor is it merely the sporting event with the highest average attendance, nor is it simply the most prestigious horse race held anywhere in the world, though it is definitely all of those things. The “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” which has been run every year in south Louisville, Kentucky, going back to 1875 boasts annual crowds of more than 170,000 – easily surpassing the number of people that attended the biggest ever Super Bowl – and a purse of $2 million, the biggest of any horse race. The “Run for the Roses” is more than all that: it is a now legendary institution of the sport on a global scale, and that combination of factors is what drives the constantly renewed interest in legal Kentucky Derby betting options.
Fortunately, unlike some other forms of wagering on sports, horse racing betting is widely legal in various forms in 38 of the 50 states around the nation thanks to generally permissive state laws and specific protections found in federal anti-gambling laws. Whether you prefer to do your betting in person at the internationally famous Churchill Downs, at one of the multitudinous off track betting kiosks found in most states, or online at a domestic racebook or even at a legal offshore sports betting site base din a foreign country, there are definitely plenty of choices available. Horseplayers are some of the sharpest gamblers out there, but not all of them are aware of the ins and outs of betting on the ponies online, particularly at legal Kentucky Derby betting sites like Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and 5Dimes, but that’s where we come in.
Our aim here at LegalKentuckyDerbyBetting.com is to give already savvy horse racing enthusiasts the head start they need to get in on the action of wagering on the upcoming edition of the Derby. We will take a closer look at the current odds on the favorites to win this year’s race, the legal situation for horse racing betting in America today, the best online options for wagering on the Kentucky Derby. We’ll even cover more advanced topics like how to fund your racebook account and how to access a mobile betting platform for your smartphone so that you can take your hobby with you wherever you happen to be on Derby Day.
You had better get a refill for your mint julep in a hurry because you definitely do not want to miss out on the current Kentucky Derby betting odd being offered right now at the leading legal offshore racebook sites. You will generally be able to find better odds at overseas-based sportsbooks than you can get from brick and mortar racebooks, even the ones installed at Churchill Downs, though of course there is nothing quite like the experience of betting on the ponies while you watch the race in person. With that being said, sites like Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and 5Dimes have already got some pretty well-stocked betting boards in terms of the top horses in the running for this year’s exciting edition of the “Race for the Roses.” Such is the tightly-contested nature of “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports,” where so many legends have been made.

As we previously mentioned, there are surprisingly few laws that would even nominally prohibit residents in most states from placing wagers on horse racing events, but, even so, one of the most commonly asked questions we get is a variation of “Is it legal to bet on the Kentucky Derby?” While it almost universally legal to do so, betting on a sporting event of this magnitude outside of the Las Vegas Strip is something casual wagering enthusiasts have a hard time wrapping their brain around. In fact, not only is betting on the Kentucky Derby and other premier horse races completely legal in 38 states, there are specific federal level protections for pari-mutuel wagering on horse races as well.
Laws like the Federal Wire Act of 1961, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) had deleterious effect on sports betting and the broader online gambling industry, horse racing wagering is exempt from those prohibitions. That means American horseplayers are free to place wagers on horse races without fear of facing charges for doing so.
Most states in the country have legal horse racing betting options available for fans of the sport to enjoy, but not all do. Below you will find a list of the 12 states (plus Washington D.C.) that do not allow Kentucky Derby betting within their state lines at official, authorized state-regulated platforms. However, it should be noted that legal Kentucky Derby betting sites based overseas like Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and 5Dimes generally offer better odds and more selection when it comes to betting lines and options like mobile betting. So even if you live in one of the states below, you can still get in on the action in time for Derby Day come May – and if you do not live in one of these states you can rest assured that legal Kentucky Derby betting is available on your stomping grounds.
Alaska | Arizona | Georgia |
Hawaii | Mississippi | Missouri |
Nebraska | Nevada | North Carolina |
South Carolina | Texas | Utah |
Washington D.C. |
In certain states where it is legal to bet on horse racing online, it is only legal to do so at designated state-sanctioned websites. In Maryland, for examples, horseplayers can only legally place wagers sites like TVG.com and TwinSpires.com, whereas in New Jersey players have to use 4NJBets.com for their betting needs. Virginia requires its online pari-mutuel betting to take place at TwinSpires.com, TVG.com and XpressBet.com, but those are just a few examples, so be sure to check your local laws if you want to stick to domestic online racebooks.
Say you live in one of 12 states that do not allow betting on horse races. Maybe you don’t want to limit yourself to your state’s authorized racebook websites, but you want to get in on the action at the end of the upcoming Derby Week. In either case, you can always take your business to one of the several excellent legal offshore Kentucky Derby racebooks online. Of the myriad choices available to you, the best of the best are Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and 5Dimes. These sites not only have the most advantageous odds you are likely to find anywhere, whether online or in person at a track based racebook, but they also have bonuses and promotional offers designed to keep you playing the ponies for free if you meet certain qualifications.
Bovada Racebook has been around for over 20 years now and over that time they have proven to be a major player in the online gambling industry. They are easily one of the more recognizable names in the business and their longevity points to an obvious trend of sustained success that is always a comforting feeling when deciding on a gambling site to use.
Although they are mostly known for their sportsbook, the racebook at Bovada is one of the best you will find as well. Not only do they offer great bonus opportunities but they also have a horse racing betting rebate of 3% on all straight bets and 5% on all exotic bets. You can accept these rebates on bets regardless of whether you win or lose so you immediately know you are getting at least some of your bet back. These are just a few of the excellent betting opportunities offered at Bovada Racebook so sign up for an account today and bet on all of your favorite races, including the Kentucky Derby.

5Dimes has been around for a while now and is absolutely one of the top legal betting sites for the Kentucky Derby. 5Dimes is a little different than the other sites we have reviewed because they don’t put as much effort into the visual aesthetic of their site. Will I Go To Jail For Betting On The Kentucky Derby?
While it is true that not every state in the country allows pari-mutuel horse racing betting, in the vast majority of states it is completely legal to play the ponies for real money. Not only will you not go to jail for betting on the Kentucky Derby, there are actually many state laws and a few crucial federal laws that specifically make provisions allowing horse racing wagering to take place. Even if your particular state does not allow residents and visitors to bet on horse races, you can always hop online and check out Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and 5Dimes, as these legal Kentucky Derby racebooks, being based overseas, aren’t subject to federal laws in the first place.
Can I Sign Up At More Than One Kentucky Derby Racebook Site?
There is no limit to the number of legal Kentucky Derby racebook sites at which you can sign up. In fact, we strongly encourage our readers to take advantage of this strategy as a way to make sure you are getting the best odds on the horses and races of your choice. Shopping around for the best odds is one of the most effective long term betting tactics that any savvy bettor should definitely adopt. Additional benefits of signing up at more than one sportsbook include spreading out your winnings over several accounts so that you can avoid getting stuck with sub-par odds once you win too much (hey, the leading racebooks are not charities!) and taking advantage of multiple sites’ promotional offers.
How Much Money Is Bet On The Kentucky Derby?
Though there is no way to know exactly how much money is bet worldwide on an event as internationally prestigious as the Kentucky Derby, especially given that legal Kentucky Derby racebooks based in foreign countries don’t have to report their handle to US authorities, it is a substantial amount indeed. However, Churchill Downs’ on-site racebook takes in approximately $200 million in wagers on race day alone, and several million more through the run up to the “Run for the Roses” during Derby Week. It is estimated that the total online handle from all around the world is in the billions of dollars, but it could be even more.
If The Horse I Bet On Gets Scratched, What Happens To My Bet?
Two things can happen if the horse you bet on gets scratched, or does not line up at post time. If you bet on a horse to win or place at the Kentucky Derby on a futures betting line, then your money will not be returned to you. However, if you place a bet on the day of the race but he fails to make it to the starting gate or is disqualified then you will have your money refunded. This is referred to as a “consolation payment” worth the amount you wagered on the scratched horse.
What Is The Fastest Withdrawal Method At Legal Kentucky Derby Racebooks?
If you decide to do your betting in person at Churchill Downs on the day of the race, then you should have your winnings in hand as soon as your credit card transaction processes the payment, or, alternatively, you can wait a few minutes for the nice folks in the payout line to write up a check for you. If you mail in your mutuel ticket, then you will need to provide several forms of identification before your winnings will be released, and even then it could take a few weeks before your check reaches you. If you did your wagering at legal offshore racebooks like Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI or 5Dimes, we recommend you accept your payment in a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum – the wait time in measured in minutes, not days or weeks. Otherwise stick to the credit card or bank wire transfer, as those are generally the fastest withdraw methods at legal Kentucky derby racebooks based overseas.
There are two different kinds of bets to choose from at legal online racebooks, straight wagers, and exotic wagers. Straight wagers include win, place, show, and across the board bets, while exotics contain exacta, trifecta, and superfecta bets.
- Win – A win bet is exactly what it sounds like, a wager on a horse you believe will win the race.
- Place – A place bet is a wager on a horse finishing in either first or second. If you aren’t feeling confident enough to guarantee a victory, a place bet allows you to predict a horse you feel is going to finish in the top two.
- Show – A show bet is the same as a place bet except you can bet on a horse to finish in one of the top three positions. With you being allotted three-bet positions, you won’t get as much of a payout as you would with a more specific bet like a win or place.
- Across the Board (Win, Place & Show) – Across the board bets are wagers in which you bet on a horse to win, place, and show. So you select three horses to finish in the top three. Regardless of where they finish, you win as long as all three finish in the top three.
- Exacta – An exacta is an exotic bet that is a prediction for who will finish first, and second, in order.
- Exacta Box – Just like a traditional exacta bet, an exacta box bet allows you to select several other horses that you might think could finish first or second.
- Trifecta – A trifecta is the same thing as an exacta except you are predicting the top three finishers of a race in order.
- Trifecta Box – A trifecta box allows you to have multiple predictions for who will finish in the top three spots, in order.
- Superfecta – A superfecta is the toughest exotic bet of them all as it requires bettors to wager on the top four finishers of a given race, in order.
- Superfecta Box – Gives you multiple predictions of the first, second, third, and fourth place finishers in order.

Morning line odds are a list of the participants of a horse race and their betting lines as decided on by a sportsbook, bookmaker, or track handicapper. Called a morning line because it is usually posted on the morning of the race, before wagering even starts.
A tote board is where the Kentucky Derby betting odds are calculated and posted at a race track. The name comes from the old calculator company named “American Totalisator”. It posts the odds of every horse in a given race as well as the potential payouts.
Things to know before placing a bet include the track name, race number, dollar amount of your bet, the type of bet you are looking to place, the number given to the horse you are wagering on and things like that. You can never be too prepared to place bets and the more information you know before you actually place said bet, the more educated your bets become.

Early Kentucky Derby Betting
The first ever Kentucky Derby was run in the year 1875. It’s made up of 20 three-year-old thoroughbreds, which is a larger field than most races. The track itself, Churchill Downs, is 1.25 miles and is located in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s the first race of the Triple Crown series and it is run on the first Saturday of May every year. It’s been nicknamed the “run for the roses” and the “most exciting two minutes in sports” and is one of the most prestigious sporting events in all of American sports.
