What Is The Green Jersey In The Vuelta
The symbol of the Green Jersey is Peter Sagan. There is no reason denying it. With seven Tour de France ŠKODA Green Jerseys under his belt, he is the record-breaker and the ultimate Mr Green. So, how come the Vuelta’s overall winner Primož Roglič won the green as well? With all due respect, he is no sprinter – the reason is is because the points classification at La Vuelta is entirely different from the one at the Tour.
The points are awarded according to the placement at the finish line of every single stage. There are intermediate sprints as well but the number of points awarded there (4 points for the fastest rider) does not make much difference in comparison to the stage wins (25 points for the fastest rider). With the high number of summit finishes at La Vuelta, the results often correlate with the general classification.

/ Green jersey at the Vuelta It was a relatively calm stage at La Vuelta today and, as expected, it all came down to a very fast sprint finish. The guys worked again very well and in the last climb, with 30km to go, they pulled hard in the front, trying to break the peloton. The points classification is a secondary competition in the Tour de France, which started in 1953. Points are given for high finishes in a stage and for winning intermediate sprints, and these are recorded in a points classification. It is considered a sprinters' competition. The leader is indicated by a green jersey, which has become a metonym for the points classification competition. The system has inspired many other cycling races; the other two Grand Tours have also installed points. Ackermann wins the stage, while Roglic keeps the green jersey. Points ranking after stage 9: 1. Primoz Roglic 104 2. Richard Carapaz 81 3. Daniel Martin 73 4. Guillaume Martin 50 5. Michael Woods 45 6. Hugh Carthy 45 7. Alejandro Valverde 35 9. Pascal Ackermann.
In 2012, for example, John Degenkolb won five sprint stages but finished fourth in the points classification. Alejandro Valverde scored the points needed in the mountains and beat him by 50 in the end. Coincidently, Valverde, alongside Seán Kelly and Laurent Jalabert, has 4 titles to his name. Will Roglič threaten this record in the future? We shall see.
