On 31 October, Blizzard’s Overwatch World Cup will be the stage for almost forty teams representing different countries all over the world, with each team having a minimum of six players.

The Overwatch World Cup will begin just a day before Blizzcon, which starts on 1 November. It will begin with the online preliminaries for United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Russia, Finland, and all other teams not seeded in the top five based on last year’s results. Following days will feature the United States of America, Canada, China, France and South Korea, as well as continuing the post-preliminary matches of the previous day.

The prize pools keep changing with each passing event. The most lucrative Overwatch World Cup event was the first one, featuring $288,000 in prize money. The lowest the event went was the very next year, packing “only” $72,000. Every iteration of Overwatch World Cup has.

Teams will likely be competing for a prize pool similar to that of last year’s: approximately USD 16,000, which is quite a hefty sum considering the nature of this tournament.

While it is still a serious competition, the enthusiasm and hype surrounding teams are more superficial compared to the rigour of the Overwatch League – not only do teams have significantly less time to practice, selected players also may not be the most ideal. Players who were extremely active in the Overwatch League (who are considered the cream of the crop) may choose to sit out on the World Cup to avoid burnout.

Don’t let that distract you from the fact that this is still a significant opportunity for players to leave their mark, however. Players outside the reach of western media influences, such as those in Asian countries other than China or South Korea can capitalise on this chance to display their skills on the world stage, against the best of the best.

It’s best not to ignore the rest of the teams participating in the preliminaries – some of them could be the dark horse of this World Cup. The Singapore team is coached by Seetoh “John Galt” Jian Qing, who now is and has been the coach of two Overwatch League teams. Teams like Russia, Finland and Denmark may also prove tough contenders for the grand prize, what with so many talents on these teams.
